Tainted politician Babu Singh Kushwaha on Thursday addressed a large gathering in Uttar Pradesh's Farrukhabad district, despite earlier claims made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that the expelled Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader will not be 'used' in any election campaign in the poll-bound north Indian state. Kushwaha sparked a rift within the BJP after he joined the party ahead of the assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh. While senior BJP leaders like L K Advani, M M Joshi, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley have reportedly refused to back or campaign Kushwaha but avoided a direct opposition to his appointment, other leaders like Maneka Gandhi have strongly spoken out against the party move. Kushwaha was expelled last November by BSP chairperson and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati over charges that he was trying to broker a deal with India’s ruling Congress party to dodge a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the NRHM scam.
