Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asking for more security because she believes there is a grave threat to her life, media reports said Wednesday. When contacted, leaders from her party Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Delhi declined to share details of the perceived threat. Mayawati's security had been reduced earlier this year after her increasingly unpopular government was ousted in state elections by overwhelming majority by the Samajwadi Party.
Famous for erecting statues of herself and icons of her party, Mayawati has a penchant for paranoia, a secret U.S. assessment of the former CM leaked by whistleblowing website WikiLeaks had said last year. In a section of the secret communique titled “Eccentric Paranoia”, the U.S. allegedly observed that Mayawati's full majority victory in May 2007 UP State Assembly elections left her beholden to no one and has allowed her to act on her eccentricities, whims and insecurities. “When she needed new sandals, her private jet flew empty to Mumbai to retrieve her preferred brand. According to Lucknow journalists, she employs nine cooks (two to cook, the others to watch over them) and two food tasters,” the cable said.
