Mayawati's statue vandalised, BSP slams Act

UP Nav Nirman Sena vandalized a life-sized marble statue of former UP chief minister Mayawati in Lucknow city on Thursday afternoon. The statue was broken minutes after the national president of the group, UP Navnirman Sena, told reporters at a press conference in the city that if the state government didn't dismantle Mayawati's statues, as promised before the assembly polls, his outfit would do it in the next 72 hours. State police chief A C Sharma said three youths, who helped the main suspect, Amit Jani, president of little known UP Navnirman Sena, hold a press conference here were arrested. The detained youths, however, claimed innocence. “We had only helped in organising the press conference,” Vishal Mishra, one of the detained youths, said. Sharma said Jani had a criminal past. “He faces seven criminal cases,” he added. Political parties, including the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP), decried the incident and demanded that the offenders be punished. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav ordered immediate repair of the statue. “It is a conspiracy to disturb the social harmony in the state,” he said. The marble statue of Mayawati had been installed at the B R Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Sthal here along with the statues of several other dalit icons and a special security force had been formed for their protection.
Meanwhile BSP on its website reports SP supporters  damaged a statue of sister  Mayawati at the Ambedkar Park in Lucknow’s Gomtinagar area. According to reports, the mob reached the park around 1:30 pm on bikes with hammers and other tools and started damaging the statue. Attackers Amit  broke the hands and the head of the statue. BSP leader Swami Prasad Maurya alleged that the state government is responsible for the attack. “It is the Samajwadi Party government behind the incident,” Maurya told media. However, Mayawati has reportedly urged his party workers to ´stay calm´.

Akhilesh Yadav renames 8 UP districts

Uttar Pradesh(UP) Government on Monday changed the names of the eight districts which had been renamed by the previous Mayawati regime, official sources said. And on expected lines, the former chief minister is crying foul. The BSP chief immediately accused the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government of changing the names "with an ill will." She claims the districts were named after saints, gurus and Dalit icons during her regime. "New districts were created during BSP regime and named after Dalit and Other Backward Classes (OBC) icons so that they always remain a source of inspiration for the society," Mayawati in a statement.
The decision in this regard was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. While Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar, formerly known as Amethi, will now be known as Gauriganj, Rambai Nagar will be called Kanpur dehat. The names of Bheem Nagar, Prabuddha Nagar and Pancheel Nagar have been changed to Bahjoi, Shamli and Hapur respectively, they said. Similarly names of Kanshiram Nagar, Mahamaya Nagar and JP Nagar have been changed to Kasganj, Hathras and Amroha respectively. The Cabinet also restored the name of King George's Medical University (KGMU), which was changed to Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University in the BSP regime.

The observers fast during this time and recite Quran and offer prayers.

EC rejects Mulayam's vote in Presidential poll

The Election Commission rejected Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav's vote in the Presidential poll and directed the Returning Officer (RO) not to count it as the secrecy of the ballot had been violated. "The issue of second ballot paper to Mulayam Singh Yadav was not warranted under rule 15 of the Presidential and Vice- Presidential Elections Rules, 1974. Therefore, the second ballot paper issued to Yadav may not be taken up for counting," the Commission said. The poll panel also directed the RO that the first ballot paper issued to Yadav cannot be counted as its secrecy was violated.
In a faux pas, Yadav had cast his vote in favour of BJP-backed candidate P A Sangma instead of UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee but realised his mistake to make a correction. Yadav, who was among the early voters, after marking his vote for Sangma, tore the ballot paper and sought a fresh one from the polling officer. The SP chief then marked his correct preference on the fresh ballot paper.

Dinesh Sharma sworn in Lucknow Mayor

BJP Leader, Dinesh Sharma sworn in as Mayor of Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) for 2nd time. The Bharatiya Janata Party retained the seat of mayor in Lucknow's municipal corporation polls in election held last week in UP Civic polls. Dinesh Sharma, who was the incumbent, defeated his nearest Congress rival Neeraj Bora by over a lakh votes. In what marks a rare indication of a cordial relation between Samajwadi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party, newly elected mayor, Dinesh Sharma on Saturday said that it is the collective responsibility of municipal corporations to help the state government in its endeavour to improve the city’s amenities. At the same time, the mayor demanded the state government to allocate due funds under the 13th Financial Commission and Samagra Vikas Yojana, due towards the LMC.
Touching on almost all civic issues, Sharma promised action and said, “One thing that requires immediate action is the problem of water logging.” He also said the corporation will try to rectify the losses of about Rs 250-300 crore. Moreover, against a requirement of 16,000 workers, only 3,000 - 5,000 posts are occupied in the corporation, necessitating the hiring process to improve the condition of the city, he said. He urged all the corporators to not let their party and ideological affiliations hamper the working of the corporation and come together for a better functioning of the corporation. Among those present were Lucknow MP Lalji Tandon, BJP vice-president Kalraj Mishra and Municipal Commissioner N P Singh, while the event was hosted by Additional Municipal Commissioner P K Srivastav.

Jayant Chaudhary Supports diktat of Baghpat khap panchayat

In a shocking turn of events, RLD chief Ajit Singh's son, Jayant Chaudhary, backs the Khap diktat on women in Uttar Pradesh. He says that the Khap has issued instructions and they should not be taken as a diktat. The Khap panchayat had earlier slapped a Taliban-style diktat on women stating that they should not go out anywhere unless accompanied by a male relative. “Everybody has a right to manage the affairs of one’s family the way they want. They (the panchayat members) are doing just that. It is no diktat. It is a mere suggestion from their side,” said MP and RLD chief and aviation minister Ajit Singh’s son, Jayant Chaudhary, after he visited the panchayat members on Saturday. He avoided answering direct media queries on the issue of women’s rights in light of the panchayat orders. Earlier, Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) and All India Jat Arakshan Samiti (AIJAS) had supported the diktat.
Chaudhary said panchayats and village elders put in continous effort to creat awareness among the youth about dowry, foeticide and other evil practices. "Thus it cannot be considered as diktats or orders but can be called guidance," he said. His comments came against the backdrop of directives issued by a panchayat in Asara village in Baghpat's Ramala area in UP banning love marriages and barring women below 40 years of age from going out for shopping and using mobile phones outside their homes. Meanwhile another Khap Mahasabha takes a welcome move in Haryana demands murder charge for female foeticide. In Haryana they took the unanimous decision and declare openly that female foeticide was as gruesome as murder. "Female foeticide is a crime which also gives rise to another evil of honour killing. By ensuring the end of female foeticide, we could also curb incidents of honour killing," said Om Prakash Maan of Khap panchayat.

The Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party didn’t contest these elections but the SP-supported candidates won in Bareilly and Ghaziabad while Allahabad seat went to BSP-supported candidate. SP-supported candidate Sudha Rawat was declared winner in Ghaziabad amidst vehement protest by the BJP nominee Teluram and party workers. As for Congress, it was a total wipeout for the party which failed to win a single seat. A beaming UP BJP chief Laxmikant Bajpayi claimed that the SP government’s honeymoon was over. Giving credit to the people's support after God's blessing and BJP workers' hard work, Bajpayi said: “People's honeymoon of 115 days with Samajwadi Party government is over and with this support now BJP will ensure a divorce between the people and SP government in 2014 LS poll.”

UP Civic Polls: Impressive win for BJP

After the drubbing in assembly elections three months ago, BJP in Uttar Pradesh was on Saturday buyoed by the success in three-tier urban local body polls. "Despite the defeat in assembly elections, we decided to contest the local body polls on the party symbol and due to combined hard work of leaders and workers and support of the public, we have achieved grand success," BJP state president Laxmi Kant Bajpai told reporters in Lucknow.
Maintaining its dominance in urban local bodies, the party on Saturday won 7 of 12 Mayoral posts in municipal corporations in the three-tier elections. He said while Congress contested directly and was badly defeated, SP and BSP were in the fray indirectly by supporting independent candidates and lost. "In local body elections, party workers and all national and state leaders rose above "I" and worked as "we" and victory is the result of this," Bajpai said. He claimed it was clear from result of the urban body polls that SP magic on public during assembly elections was waning and people have rejected it's policy of Muslim appeasement. Bajpai termed results of local body polls as a "positive signal" for BJP ahead of 2014 Lok Sabha elections. "Lok Sabha elections will be contested by formulating district-wise strategy and the state unit would make an important contribution in brining BJP-led NDA at the Centre," he said.

No proof of corruption against Mayawati: Supreme Court

In a breather to BSP supremo and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati, the Supreme Court on Friday quashed a CBI probe against her in the disproportionate assets case and also pulled up the CBI for initiating the probe against her without specific directions from the court. The court said that the CBI should not have lodged an FIR against Mayawati as there was no direction from it. "We are satisfied that we didn't issue any direction to probe alleged disproportionate assets of Mayawati between 1995-2003," the court said.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati thanked her party workers for standing by her through out the long legal struggle. " I heartily welcome the Supreme Court verdict. I also thank my party workers for their patience. They stood by me like a rock. They always sided with me," she told media here. "My party workers derived inspiration from Baba Ambedkar's life and the struggle of late Kansi Ram and stood firm. They know that if the oppressed want to move ahead the road will be full of thorns, but they were not perturbed," she said. "Our people had the belief that Behenji is on the same path, and that we should not get distracted and continue to support Behenji," she added. The apex court today said it could not pass an order against Mayawati, as there wasn't enough material evidence. Mayawati had filed a petition in May 2008, seeking quashing of the criminal proceedings against her in the case, alleging it was an act of political vendetta. She claimed she had received the money through donations from party workers.

Heavy Monsoon rain in Lucknow, part of UP

Heavy rains lashed Lucknow and other parts of Uttar Pradesh early on Thursday, bringing respite from the hot and muggy weather. The downpour is likely to continue for the next few days, a Met department official said. Heavy rainfall was reported from the cities of Lucknow and Jhansi and the districts of Barabanki, Unnao and Faizabad. However, there is no rain yet in the rest of North India. India's largest dam, the Bhakra Nangal, has reached a critical level and there is a similar situation at seven reservoirs in the North. This has worsened the power situation further with major outages across Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi. Monsoon rains have been 30 per cent deficient so far and the weather office data showed 82 per cent of the area of the country, including the granary states of Punjab and Haryana, are receiving deficient or scanty rainfall.

Akhilesh Yadav's U-turn on cars for MLAs from Vidhayak Nidhi

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s proposal to allow legislators to purchase a car worth Rs 20 lakh from MLA Local Area Development Fund (Vidhayak Nidhi) drew sharp reaction from Opposition parties who said that this decision would dent their public image. The BJP, the BSP and the Congress immediately declared that their legislators would not use this fund for non-development purposes like car purchasing. The Chief Minister’s announcement came on Tuesday when he declared increase in Vidhayak Nidhi from existing Rs 1.25 crore to Rs 1.50 crore and also proposed that legislators — both MLAs and MLCs — can purchase a car worth up to Rs 20 lakh from this fund.
He clarified that it would not be mandatory for each legislator to purchase a vehicle. “The proposal will help poor legislators to get a new car. With this vehicle, they will be able to cover their constituency better,” Yadav said. The Vidhan Sabha has 403 members while Vidhan Parishad has 110. If all the MLAs buy a vehicle worth Rs 20 lakh, the cost to the State exchequer would be more than Rs 100 crore. He said that the legislators, after completion of their term, could deposit the depreciated cost of the vehicle in the State exchequer and get the car registered in their names. If they failed to do so, the car would become Government property, he added. “The Government will not pay for petrol or its maintenance as they get money for this under different heads,” the Chief Minister clarified.

Pranab Mukherjee meets Mulayam, Akhilesh Yadav

United Progressive Alliance (UPA) presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee met Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav here on Tuesday, and said he continues to enjoy the support of various political leaders in the race to Raisina Hill. "I just now had a discussion with Samajwadi Party MLAs, leaders and MPs. Now, I am going to have a discussion with Congress and other alliance parties, and thereafter I will have a discussion with BSP MLAs, MPs and leaders. All of them have extended their support to me," he said.
Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who also accompanied Mukherjee during his meeting with the Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders, has formed a committee to oversee his daylong Uttar Pradesh visit. Pranab Mukherjee is pitted against former Lok Sabha speaker P.A. Sangma, who is supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the AIADMK.

UP Govt. provides 20 Lakh from Development fund for Cars

Uttar Pradesh government Tuesday allowed the legislators to withdraw Rs.20 lakh from their development fund to purchase a car, a move that has triggered a political storm in the state with the Congress, BJP and BSP protesting against it. If all the 402 legislators in the state assembly purchase cars from their local area development (LAD) funds, it will cost the exchequer by Rs.80.60 crore. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, was met with stiff protest by opposition benches as MLAs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) opposed the move saying they found the whole decision very strange. According to established guidelines for the use of MLA funds, the fund cannot be used for personal use.
Uttar Pradesh has 403 MLAs; the government’s largesse will cost the state exchequer over Rs 80 crore. The Chief Minister also increased the MLA fund, better known as Vidhayak Nidhi, entitlement from the current 1.25 crore to Rs 1.5 crore. "Despite a financial crisis, the SP government has fulfilled all the promises it made in the party manifesto in the budget. We entitle MLAs to purchase vehicles upto Rs 20 lakh from their local area development fund", Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav announced in the state Assembly. He said that value of the vehicle will be depreciated per year and after the end of five years the MLAs could deposit the depreciated amount and hand over their vehicle. "This will help MLAs, who did not have money to buy the vehicle", Akhilesh said adding that the government would not give any amount for maintenance of the vehicles.

Euro Cup 2012 Winner is Spain

Spain confirmed their status as one of the greatest national teams in football history by overwhelming Italy 4-0 in Sunday's Euro 2012 final in Kiev to retain their European crown. Vicente del Bosque's team became the first side to successfully defend a European Championship title, as well as the first to win three consecutive major tournaments after their triumphs at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup. Accused in some quarters of having lost their ability to excite, Spain produced a thrilling demonstration of attacking football to confirm beyond doubt that this remains a golden age for Spanish football. Andres Iniesta and Xavi were the architects of victory, playing key roles in goals by David Silva, Jordi Alba and Fernando Torres, who teed up fellow substitute Juan Mata for Spain's fourth. The match-winner in the Euro 2008 decider against Germany, Torres became the first player to score in two European Championship finals, while it was the most handsome winning margin in a final in the tournament's history.
