Justice Altamas Kabir appointed New Chief Justice of India(CJI) of India today in New Delhi. President Pranab Mukherjee gives oath of office to the new Chief Justice of India at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. His term will continue till July 2013. Born on 19th July, 1948 at Kolkata, Justice Kabir did his M.A. and LL.B. from University of Calcutta. He was enrolled at the Bar on 1st August, 1973 and was made a permanent judge of Calcutta High Court on 6th August, 1990. Justice Kabir assumed the office of acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court on 11th January, 2005. He was elevated as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court on 1st March, 2005 and was made a judge of the Supreme Court of India on 9th September, 2005. Justice Kabir was responsible for the computerization of the Calcutta High Court and the City Civil Court and other Courts in Kolkata. He was appointed as Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority on 14th January, 2010.

Diesel Price increased by Rs. 5, SP-TMC want rollback

Government has raised the diesel price by a steep Rs 5 per litre and capped the number of subsidised cooking gas cylinder to six per household a year, decisions that will rake in an additional Rs 20,300 crore to the oil companies The government, however, left untouched the price of petrol and kerosene. Faced with the task of bringing down the ballooning oil subsidy, the governemnt for the first time introduced a cap on supply of LPG cylinders of 14.2 kg that will make the consumers pay market price for cylinders beyond six. The tough decisions, which came under immediate attack from allies like Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party and opposition alike, were taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said, "We want rollback. I am shocked. The matter is very serious and sensitive; we can't compromise with the people's issue. We will discuss in our party meeting and our plan of action. We know the economic crisis we are with the government but enough is enough". Samajwadi Party, which provides external support to the UPA, said it wants an immediate rollback. "The decision is ill-timed and will hurt the common man," said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

UP Govt. launches Berojgari Bhatta/ Unemployment Allowance

Uttar Pradesh(UP) chief minister Akhilesh Yadav finally launches the much awaited unemployment allowance/ Berojgari Bhatta. As many as 10,500 youth received cheques of Rs 1,000 each at an impressive function organized on the sprawling grounds of Colvin Taluqdar's College in Lucknow. The remaining 5 lakh beneficiaries identified by the government, will receive the allowance on a quarterly basis, through electronic transfer, directly into their bank accounts. A total of about 9 lakh youth were estimated to gain under this unemployment allowance scheme.
Unemployed youth in the age group of 25- 40 years are entitled under the scheme to receive a monthly dole of Rs 1,000 until they get some employment. Among the other criterion for the eligibility was a registration with employment office as on August 31, a minimum qualification of High School and an annual family income of not more than Rs 36,000. Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister described the scheme as "fulfillment of the biggest commitment made by me during the elections." He said, "This is a historic step towards empowerment of the youth and it is a proud moment for me to be implementing it in less than six months of the formation of the Samajwadi Party government."

SC/ST Promotion bill presented in Rajya Sabha, SP opposes

One of most controversial and crucial bill for providing reservation in Promotions to Scheduled Castes(SC) and Scheduled Tribes(ST) candidates in govt jobs is presented today at 1200. The Bill was introduced amid scuffle between SP and BSP members.  A scuffle on Wednesday broke out between BSP MP Avatar Singh and SP Naresh Aggarwal during the tabling of the SC, ST quota bill in Rajya Sabha. Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2pm amid the ruckus. The quota bill would be taken up for debate at 2pm.
Yesterday Cabinet cleared  the bill while bill need to be passed in Rajya Sabha for constitution amendment. BSP Leader Mayawati express hapiness and urge BJP and other parties to pass this bill for SC/ST across India. Meanwhile Samajwadi Party(SP) leader Mulayam singh yadav express deep anger over the bill and said Congress have to pay the price.
