Supreme Court has appointed retired Justice Virendra Singh as Uttar Pradesh Lokayukta. Supreme Court said that constitutional authorities have failed to implement our order therefore we are exercising our inherent power under article 142 of constitution.Earlier, Supreme Court came down heavily on Uttar Pradesh Government for not appointing Lokayukta despite repeated orders.
The apex Court had sought a short list of 5 people from the Uttar Pradesh Government when it resumed hearing on the matter at half past noon. On Monday the court given a strict direction to the Uttar Pradesh government directing it to appoint a new Lokayukta within the next two days. However, Uttar Pradesh Government’s three-member selection committee comprising Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Swami Prasad Maurya could not hammer out a name in a meeting held on Tuesday.
